The Official Secrets Act 1989 makes it an offence to disclose official information within six specified categories if the disclosure has damaged the national interest.
The D Notice system is a voluntary code that provides guidance to the British Media relating to the publication of broadcasting of national security information. There are presently 5 D Notices in operation (as at 15.9.08). These relate to the following:
Military Operations, Plans and Capabilities
Nuclear and non nuclear weapons and equipments Ciphers and Secure Communications Sensitive installations and home addresses UK Security and Intelligence Services and Special Services Government Basic Guide to the Official Secrets Act 1989 MOD Website Guidance on disclosure.
